It was a scorching afternoon. The hot sun beat down on the ground, leaving the trees and grass to wither in a blazing heat. After a long day, I trudged home wearily, lugging my heavy school bag. It seemed extraordinarily heavy as my shoulders stooped even more.
As I was on my way home, I heard a faint noise coming from behind the bushed. I was filled with curiosity. I whirled my head in all directions and advanced nearer to the bushes. Suddenly, I caught a sight of a young girl, whose face was as white as a sheet, sobbing quietly behind the bushed.
"Why are you crying? What happened to you?" I asked her and took out a handkerchief from my pocket to wipe off the tears on her freckled face.
"I...I cannot find...my mummy," the girl stammered nervously, looking helpless and pathetic.
"Can I help you? Where is your home?"
"I don't know." the girl replied, shaking her head. With no choice, I searched for her mother in the vicinity as I thought she would not have gone too far. We scanned the sea of faces but it was no use. Disappointment was written all over my face and I was on the verge of giving up.
As I wanted to take the girl to the police station, I spot a middle-aged lady who was like a cat on hot bricks. At that moment, the girl ran towards to the lady. She shouted,"Mummy!" The lady heaved a great sigh of relief that could almost blow down a termite's nest. She hugged her daughter tightly.
The mother thanked me profusely and offered me $50 as a reward but I rejected her kindness politely since my mother had always told me not to accept monetary rewards for doing good deeds. I flashed a broad grin at the young girl. She smiled back, showing her pearly white teeth.
